We were commissioned by Geeks On A Beach Conference to make a piece that would show how technology was affecting human behavior. On the event day, we delivered this 12-foot Selfie statue.
Made out of ply and scrap wood, this assembled object resembles a person doing a selfie. We had many ideas as to how we wanted to portray tech’s influence on everyday behaviour but we thought that one of the most pervasive is this act of taking a self-portrait.
Is the selfie good? Is it bad? Many people will tell you different things. Is it vanity? Or maybe it is borne out of wanting to have control over the part of themselves that is seen and presented to the world, the basic human longing to be remembered favourably.
