Umitomachi:Town and Sea
Umitomachi: Town & Sea is a cultural exhange program between 4 port towns: Kesennuma (Japan), Hualien (Taiwan), Suwalesi (Indonesia), and Cebu (Philippines) where there are a series of activities between the towns to show and tell (over zoom) the various cultural practices, differences, and similarities between cultures.
Organized by the Kesennuma-based design studio Pensea, and Japanese artist agent Miki Yabe, with support from the Japan Foundation, Umitomachi made it possible for participants from the four participating countries to get a glimpse of cultural things such as cooking food, making music, and creating art. It allowed for people to make connection through zoom by talking about everyday things.
Our Role: We were the country coordinators for the Philippines, joining the coordinating team of Athina Dinda from Indonesia, Jing Liao from Taiwan. We also contributed illustrations to the event materials.
